Reactivating a heritage building to house a fun, Latin-inspired pop-up restaurant.

CLIENT

Indigo Oscar is a Latin-inspired pop-up bar and restaurant by Z1Z, the hospitality arm of Tattarang. It’s located in the iconic Indiana Tearooms building, situated right on Cottesloe beach with amazing views of the Indian Ocean.

CHALLENGE

The goal was to reactivate a heritage building with a new vibrant interior to house a Latin-inspired restaurant concept. As a pop-up, there were tight parameters around budget and deadlines. From the time of briefing to the opening for summer trade was four months. The building was also undergoing a major transformation in the near future, so the fittings needed to be agile and re-purposed for this next phase.

The vision was to create an experience of casual dining – easy and tasty food in a fun, laid-back, fresh space. The full interior design scope, procurement and styling took influence from both the existing colonial-style detailing and the Latin menu. The design centred around a modern spin on Central American architecture, colour palettes, and the eclectic vibrancy of its streets. With the project being at the end of 2021, the process faced challenges, such as the availability of loose furniture, materials and freight, which we navigated by collaborating with our network of incredible local craftspeople.

The vision was to create an experience of casual dining—easy and tasty food in a fun, laid-back, fresh space. The full interior design scope, procurement and styling took influence from both the existing colonial-style detailing and the Latin menu. The design centred around a modern spin on South American architecture, colour palettes, and the eclectic vibrancy of its streets. With the project being at the end of 2021, the process faced challenges to do with COVID, such as the availability of loose furniture and materials and the freight delays, which we navigated by collaborating with our network of incredible local craftspeople

OUTCOMES

The pop-up opened on schedule and was an instant success. The highly original and playful concept and execution attracted media attention and exceeded both the client’s expectations and targets. It demonstrated how a design team can execute sustainable and socially responsible solutions, generate success for their Client, and achieve an important place re-making.
