Young George

design intent Work within a heritage building to deliver an interior with the feeling of a second home for the local community, while also reflecting the quality, approachable direction of the venue.

Young George (formerly The Wine Store) sits within an existing heritage building, services a strong local community and offers quality food and wine in a low-key environment. Our brief was to reflect that, yet also create an interior that could be at once intimate and lively.

We brought in reclaimed timbers, natural stone and leather – a textural materials palette to create that intimacy; and whites, greys, black and greenery – a classic colour palette to work with and highlight the retained features of the 1905 building. Our revamp also included an underground cellar, in which we highlighted limestone walls and aged floorboards.

To meet our brief, we sourced unique materials, created custom pieces (such as the handmade mirror wall) and repurposed and customised 44 gallon drums (now functioning as waiters’ stations) and a concrete trough (now a communal wash basin).

This project was completed in 2012 and received numerous awards.
